SANDY, OR (KPTV) -

Crews from the Sandy Fire Department rescued an 80-year-old woman from her home Wednesday after a tree fell into the house and trapped her in bed.

Crews arrived on the scene just after 8:00 a.m. after a neighbor called about a 36-inch diameter Fir tree that fell into the victim’s home.

The firefighters were quickly able to make contact with the woman, who told them she had “some scratches” but was otherwise fine.

She told the firefighters she had gone to bed early Tuesday night, and said that shortly after the power went out in her home the tree fell, trapping her with just inches of space to move.

She had been able to get herself free once it had become daylight, then made her way to the deck on the back of her home. Crews removed a section of the deck railing and helped the woman down with a ladder.

The woman was evaluated by medical crews at the scene and declined further treatment.

Rescue officials said the woman was fortunate to not only avoid injury, but to have neighbors checking on her.

“This woman was incredibly lucky to have survived this incident. This really emphasizes the importance of neighbors checking on each other and checking on the elderly, especially in rural areas and in weather related events." Sandy Fire Chief Phil Schneider said in a release.
