Friday the 13th proves lucky for Megabucks jackpot winner

A Keizer man became a millionaire thanks to a lottery ticket he purchased on Friday the 13th.

Barry Nix said he was shopping at Fred Meyer off Salem Parkway on Friday, Nov. 13 when he decided to buy a Megabucks ticket.

Nix said he plays every so often, "and won $40 once and thought I was a big winner."

Nix was back at Fred Meyer on Monday and checked his ticket. The scanner told him to visit the lottery office.

Without even checking his numbers, Nix headed to Salem. It turns out he had won $6.6 million.

"When they told me at the window that I had won $6.6 million, I almost lost it," Nix said. "When the people behind the counter said congratulations, I kept looking behind me. I couldn't believe it. I am not an emotional person, but I had to remember to breathe. I just couldn't believe it. I'm not sure I believe it now."

Nix validated his ticket at the lottery office and then returned Tuesday morning with a financial plan, along with his very surprised wife, who he split the jackpot with.

"One of the biggest challenges I had was how I was going to tell my wife," he said. "I went to her work and took her to lunch."
