Homeowners cleaning Portland attic find tear gas, crowd grenades

Posted: Updated:

Homeowners cleaning out an attic discovered a stash of tear gas canisters and crowd dispersal grenades, accidentally discharging tear gas in the process.

The owners of the home said they purchased the property on the 5600 block of Northeast Killingsworth Street three years ago, and that it had been converted into apartments..

While cleaning the attic Wednesday they found the stash of items hidden behind some insulation.

While removing the items, one of the tear gas canisters began to leak out the irritant inside, causing the homeowners to call 911 after they started feeling the effects.

The homeowners were treated by first responders at the scene.

Portland Police Bureau officers noted the items found were law enforcement grade materials, not available to the public. They also determined the items were made in the 1990’s though there was no indication on how long they had been kept in the home.

Officers from the PPB Explosives Disposal Unit and the Portland Fire & Rescue Hazardous Materials Response Team also reported to the scene.
