Portland City council passes closed captioning ordinance

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The next time you watch a football game at a bar or restaurant, you will notice something a little different.

On Wednesday, the city council unanimously passed an ordinance that would require any public televisions to turn on the closed captioning.

Advocates for the deaf said during things like weather emergencies they are at a disadvantage.

If places like restaurants, doctors offices and gyms don't comply, they face a $500 fine.

The ordinance will go into effect in 30 days.
