Camas homes flood as heavy rain overflows storm drains

CAMAS, WA (KPTV) -

A Camas man is cleaning up the mess, after his home was flooded with up to six inches of water after Tuesday’s storm.

“My poor little drain can’t keep up, when there’s a waterfall coming into my front yard,” Blake Bergeron said.

He believes the storm drains in his neighborhood can’t handle big storms like Tuesday’s, and the city of Camas needs to do something about it.

Bergeron lives on a hilly part of Camas, near Northwest 32nd Avenue and Northwest Ivy Lane. He said it’s not leaves or debris blocking the drains in his neighborhood, it is that they can’t handle the amount of water that comes through here.

“When it comes down, it just comes down that street like a river,” neighbor Derrick Huckvale said.

These homeowners have had to deal with two major storms in the past three weeks, one on Halloween and the other on Tuesday.

Bergeron’s garage was flooded all the way to the back and as deep as six inches in some spots. The water made it into his basement too, where he says his Pergo flooring was floating.

“It’s devastating, man,” he said.

Bergeron said says he’s been talking to the city for two years about it, but nothing has been done. He says, even when he called the city’s emergency line to help clear it during the storm, they didn’t come for five hours.

Camas Public Works Director Steve Wall said that this area is on their radar and they will try to work with homeowners to solve the problem. He re-emphasized calling the public works emergency line if there is an immediate problem. Most cities have a number like this to call if things get bad.

“That's all I want. Give me a plan, give me a schedule and then do whatever you can to help shore me up,” Bergeron said.

He’s dug a trench to divert some of the water, but it hasn’t solved the problem. Now, it’s a race against time, as he waits for the next storm.

“I don’t know what to do. I’ve done everything I can. I think I’ve done more than most people,” Bergeron said.
