PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Crews repaired a sewage leak in southwest Portland that released an estimated 20 gallons of sewage per minute into a local creek.

The Bureau of Environmental Services said they verified the leak at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

They said the sewage seeped into North Ash Creek, a Fanno Creek tributary, just west of Southwest Lancelot Lane between Orchid and Knightsbridge drives.

The sewage seeped to the surface from an underground public sewer pipe, according to officials.

Crews cleared roots blocking a sewer line to stop the leak by 9:15 a.m. Thursday.

Due to the increase of bacteria in the water, officials are advising people in the area to avoid North Ash Creek through Friday evening.
