EUGENE, OR (AP) -

A Eugene man has been sentenced to life in prison for strangling his 63-year-old mother last year.

The Register-Guard reports that 41-year-old Timothy Cowell was found guilty of killing Elaine Wooden. He was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Suzanne Chanti told Cowell that society will be safer without him in it.

Cowell wiped tears from his face as Chanti expressed grief over the impact Cowell's actions had on his family.

Prosecutor Steve Morgan says Cowell was living with his mother after separating from his wife. He says the man killed his mother after she confronted him about drinking from a bottle of rum she purchased.

Defense attorney Elizabeth J.C. Baker says Cowell will likely appeal his murder conviction.
