Expelled student in custody after returning to Rainier campus with gun

Posted: Updated:

A student expelled from the Rainier School District returned to campus with a gun, according to administrators

The Rainier School District posted information on its website about the incident that happened Tuesday.

The district said they received reports early Wednesday morning that the underage student, who has not been identified, was on campus Tuesday with a gun.

Rainier Junior-Senior High School sits on a 260-acre campus that includes an elementary school, charter school and administrative offices, according to the district's website.

Deputies said the 15-year-old boy was expelled from school Monday. Investigators learned the father of the boy was missing a firearm.

Investigators interviewed the boy and his father and received consent to search the home, where a .22 caliber Sturm-Ruger revolver was recovered.

Deputies said they did not have probable cause to make an arrest at that time.

Further investigation revealed the boy had stolen a gun from his home and brought it onto the school campus, according to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office. Deputies said they also received information that a possible second firearm may have been stolen.

According to deputies, there was no known threat made against the school in this case.

The information was forwarded to Rainier Police Department officers, who took the boy into custody.

The boy lives within Rainier city limits, while the district campus is outside the city.

No other details were immediately released.

Anyone with questions or concerns about the incident were advised to contact the district or the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.
