Mt. Hood ski resorts plan limited weekend openings

Posted: Updated:

Ski resorts on Mt. Hood are planning a limited opening this weekend.

Mt. Hood Meadows plans to open the Buttercup lift from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday and the rail park will be open from 3 to 8:30 p.m.

A “Pray for Snow” party featuring the band Hit Machine will begin at 8 p.m.

Crews spent Friday harvesting snow from the parking lot and hauling it to the Buttercup lift to supplement the base.

“Normally, with 430 inches of snow annually, our job is try to figure out where to put it, where do we take it to?” Dave Tragethon with Mt. Hood Meadows explained. “The last couple of seasons, especially early season, we’ve found we should plow our parking lots into a pile and then we can grab that pile.”

The early season preview day is one way meadows is adapting the last few dry, warm winters.

Tragethon said last season was the second worst snowpack in 21 years. Meadows got 195 inches of snow total, well below the average 430 inches.

Despite that shortfall, Tragethon said business was only down a third, something he attributes to people’s desire to recreate.

The Meadows crew prepared for the preview day with machines making snow in the higher elevations; hard work that will help build a base for the rest of the season.

“We can feel it, how many people are saying we want a great snow season, so do we. So let’s kick it off!” Tragethon said.

The crews at Mt. Hood Meadows are confident they’ll be able to have at least a limited operation during the Thanksgiving weekend, but what days they’ll be open and for how long depend on the storm coming early next week.

Timberline plans to open Bruno’s Chair from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Early season conditions will exist at both resorts.
