General Distributors strike could affect local bars and restaurants

Posted: Updated:
OREGON CITY, OR (KPTV) -

Some local workers are on strike after they said they were asked to take a big pay cut. This strike could potentially affect local bars and restaurants.

General Distributors in Oregon City brings beer, cider, wines and non-alcoholic drinks to many local companies. More than 150 people work there, but many have not been to work the past few days.

The union workers are part of Teamsters Local 162. They said under current contract negotiations, they've been asked to take an average pay cut of $19,000 a year.

Now, some of the drivers, warehouse workers and sales people went on strike. They want their pay to stay the same as it has been.

On Friday, FOX 12 spoke with the General Manager of the Rivershore Bar & Grill in Oregon City, who said the strike has been a bit of an inconvenience for them. Since there hasn't been anyone to deliver the beer, he said they've had to take the time to go get it straight from the distributor.

"The main thing is I just got to get beers to my customers. It's a popular beer that we carry and we just have to make sure we have it for them," said Brian Grant, General Manager at Rivershore Bar & Grill.

Workers on strike said they are fighting for what they think is right.

"I'm just standing up for the middle class. We're tired of stuff being taken away. We didn't ask for less, we just want the same," said Troy Williams, a truck driver with General Distributors. "We have single moms with kids out here and people have no idea what we're going to do, and we're just trying to stick up for ourselves and that's what we're doing."

FOX 12 reached out to General Distributors, who said they've had three negotiation meetings so far. They sent a statement saying:

"The average hourly rate of the GDI union employee's total compensation package is $32.79 vs. $27.21 at their Teamster counterparts at our competition. This does not include the company owned van and free gas/maintenance that each sales rep uses to drive to and from work. As you can imagine, we are very disappointed in this employee response."

General Distributors also said they have begun hiring some replacements.

There is a bargaining session scheduled for December 2.
