Local hardware stores busy with winter preparations

Posted: Updated:

Hardware stores are seeing a rush on supplies for winter weather as the metro area faces the coldest week yet this season.

Fox 12 stopped by Ankeny Hardware in Southeast Portland on Monday. They say business has been nonstop all day with people getting parts to make sure their heaters are in working order.

"The cold weather the last few weeks has brought people out for furnace parts and heat pump parts like crazy," said Norman Chusid, who owns Ankeny Hardware. "We've had as many as 15 people lined up getting parts to fix their furnaces, whether it's a gas furnace, oil, or electric."

He added, "The main thing also if you're at home, is to check to make sure your furnace filters are clean. It’s the most important thing you can do for your furnace. If your furnace filters are dirty, your furnace is going to work extra hard to pump air through your house, you'll burn out a motor, your furnace will cost you a lot more to operate, change the filters. It's something you should do two or three times a year."

Chusid says they have also been selling a lot of rock salt and shovels as well. He says families do not want to be just prepared for the cold but also ready for snow.
