PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Security has been increased at Lewis & Clark College following reports of assaults against a black student and a transgender student on campus.

On Tuesday, students staged a sit-in outside the college president's office in response to the incidents.

The college posted information on its website about the weekend attacks.

Administrators said a transgender student was assaulted on campus early Saturday morning. An incident report was filed with the Lewis & Clark Bias Assessment Response Team and detectives were contacted at the Portland Police Bureau.

The college reported that the student is now safe and receiving support.

Portland police said they have not been able to determine any specific information about the identity of the victim, the location of the assault or other factors necessary to conduct an investigation at this time. Officers are asking anyone with information to come forward so an investigation can be launched.

Investigators said they don't know if this incident is related to another assault the same night. In that case, administrators said a black student was attacked by three white students.

The victim was treated at the scene by medical personnel and returned to his residence hall, according to a Lewis & Clark College report.

The 26-year-old victim told police the suspects used racial slurs before attacking him. He managed to fight back and get away.

No suspects have been taken into custody in either case.

Anyone with information about either case is asked to contact the campus safety office at 503-768-7777 or Portland Police Bureau Detective Todd Prosser at 503-823-9320 or todd.prosser@portlandoregon.gov.

Last week, hundreds of students and faculty members at Lewis & Clark College gathered to protest racist messages posted anonymously on the social media app Yik Yak.

Along with increased security on campus, administrators have advised students to not walk alone at night, to use the buddy system and to look out for one another.

"Lewis & Clark will not tolerate any behavior that threatens the safety of our community. We must stand together in the fight against oppression, discrimination and violence of all kinds," according to a statement from the college.
