Portland pair hope their ‘Gay Beards’ project inspires creativity

Posted: Updated:

Two best friends from Portland are now a viral sensation for putting things in their beards and snapping a picture of it

Their project called "The Gay Beards" is taking off.

Johnathan Dahl and Brian Delaurenti said it all started with a love of gardening.

“We were out in the garden with one of our buddies who was in town, we picked a couple picked flowers, put them in our beards, and the rest is history,” Delaurenti explained.

The two men have been friends since they were 8 years old and say they have a strong creative bond. So they started putting things in their beards and snapping pictures.

From ribbons to mini umbrellas and glitter, they've done it all.

“Someone wanted cheese puff beards from London, so we can make that happen,” Delaurenti said.

They have had some mishaps along the way, like when they tried Skittles and Vaseline in their beards, an experience Dahl recalled as awful, but pledged to try again.

The pair said they are working on a special "Turkey Beard" for Thanksgiving, and are even planning "12 Beards of Christmas," which they describe as, “picture every day December 1 until December 25 - it's going to be crazy!”

Dahl and Delaurenti said they know there is a lot of negativity out there, but they are just trying to be a positive force on the internet.

“We encourage people to be themselves, not be concerned about what other people think, and live out their dreams and their creativity,” Delaurenti said.

As for the project, it's gotten a lot bigger than they could have imagined.

“This has been a whirlwind of a project, but we're very luck and fortunate that it’s gotten the reception that it has,” Delaurenti said.

Both Dahl and Delaurenti advise those who want to grow a beard to just go for it, but be patient because it takes a while to completely fill in.

They both have been working on their beards since early 2013, and say they didn't have full beards for about a year.
