Rep. Blumenauer asks for community’s help to get 1,000 bikes for kids

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Eating local ice cream over the next month will not just support a Portland business, but also help kids in need get bikes for the holidays.

Congressman Earl Blumenauer partnered with Salt and Straw last year to whip up a fruitcake flavor ice cream, with all proceeds from the flavor going to the Community Cycling Center.

This year Blumenauer and the ice cream maker are teaming up again to do the same thing, and the congressman is challenging the community to help him sponsor 1,000 first bikes for kids in need.

"If you have a bicycle, whether it's brand-new in a box that you get in the holiday rush here, or if it's one you have in the garage, you can donate it here at the Community Cycling Center," Mychal Tetteh, Community Cycling Center CEO.

Blumenauer's flavor will pop up on November 27 for the December menu. Other holiday flavors will include peppermint cocoa, bourbon pecan pie, mincemeat pie and tequila spiked eggnog.
