PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

26-year-old Tanguy Muvuna says he was attacked on the campus of Lewis and Clark College because he’s black. The student from Rwanda spoke about the alleged hate crime to hundreds of students and staff Tuesday.

“Whatever happened was because I have the skin color,” said Muvuna. ”I never asked to be born black. To be black is not a crime.”

Officials say Muvuna was walking on campus late Friday night when three people attacked him, using racist language. It happened after hateful messages related to the college surfaced on “Yik Yak”, a social media site where posters can remain anonymous. Police and college leaders are investigating, but some students don’t feel they’re doing enough. For the second time in a week, students staged a sit-in at the president’s office.

“Our school hasn’t really sent out any type of emails saying this is how we can help you guys if you feel unsafe or threatened,” said freshman Restum Mohammed. “Our school hasn’t really shown us any type of support.”

Dean of Students, Anna Gonzalez, says she and the administration are open to more meetings with students and extended dialogue about improving diversity and inclusion on campus.  But right now, she says her priority is safety.

“We’re working with the police to figure out who posted those posts on Yik Yak and are they related to the individuals who assaulted our student.”

Muvuna concluded his speech by inviting all black students to join him in front of the crowd. Then, students and staff lined up to give them hugs. Muvuna says he does not want to punish the people who attacked him, but he wants them to know they haven’t broken his faith in others.

“I would like to tell those who attacked me that I forgive them. It doesn’t matter if you are black, white or yellow.  In my point of view, we are all brothers and sisters.”
