Home flipping seminar draws backlash during rental crisis

Posted: Updated:

An event planned in Portland by stars of the reality TV show Flip or Flop appeared to be flopping with a large number of Portland residents.

A sponsored post about the house flipping seminar drew angry comments, with several people referencing the city’s current shortage of available and affordable housing.

In early September, the Community Alliance of Tenants announced a Renter State of Emergency in Portland, citing skyrocketing rents and increased “no cause” evictions.

Margot Black, who is facing rent increases at her family’s SW Portland apartment, said even hearing about another possible competitor for available housing puts her on edge.

“It drives up the home values, it drives up the rents, and it seems to just perpetuate the crisis,” said Black.

Black and her husband had hoped to buy a home themselves, and had saved money to do so when they were unexpectedly evicted without cause in 2011.

“That move is the reason we can’t buy a house.  It drained us of our savings,” said Black.

The Flip or Flop seminar is scheduled for December 3rd, and will be led by a team affiliated with Tarek and Christina El Moussa, stars of the HGTV reality show.

Katrina Holland, Deputy Director of the Community Alliance of Tenants, thinks the planned seminar comes at a sensitive time.

“Coming in to teach people to flip houses in an already negative, dire situation is like a slap in the face,” said Holland.

Despite the backlash, the controversial Instagram post also received some positive comment, including some who said they planned to attend the seminar.

Attempts to reach Tarek and Christina El Moussa were unsuccessful.
