New pedestrian traffic signal installed in the Pearl District

Posted: Updated:

There's a big change to how people get around in Portland's Pearl District.

A new traffic signal was installed at 11th and Couch, and it makes pedestrians the priority.

This traffic signal is the first so-called 'pedestrian scramble' in Portland. It stops cars and allows people to cross the intersection in all directions, including diagonally.

"I live right across the street and it's been terrible because trying to get out of our garage, the cars are all backed up because the cars can't get through the intersection. There is a steady stream of pedestrians one right after another, and they don't look and see if any cars are coming. They just walk right out into the street. Now with this new spotlight here hopefully that's going to change," said Stephen Kafoury.

A total of 3 of these 'pedestrian scramble' intersections will be installed in the Pearl District.
