Portland shoppers line up early for Black Friday deals

Posted: Updated:

Some shoppers spent their Thanksgiving outside of stores in the metro Thursday, looking to be the first to get Black Friday deals.

Francisco Nava waited outside a Best Buy store in Beaverton with a crowd of friends. While some of his friends were at the store at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, he held off until 11:00 that night.

In addition to the deals, Nava is looking for the 49 inch LED TV and a laptop discounted $200, Nava said he sees this as a fun new tradition.

“After this we are going to gather up at someone’s house and celebrate Thanksgiving, after we buy everything,” he said. “This is a good tradition to do with family and friends.”

Some in the group said they passed the time overnight listening to music or playing soccer in the store parking lot, while others slept or played with toys like remote controlled cars. In addition to chairs and blankets, some waiting even brought portable heaters.

Anticipating the crowds, the store had barricades set for those waiting in line, even supplying portable toilets. Nava said that closer to the store opening at 5:00 p.m. Thursday workers will come outside and offer prizes and map out limits on products.

Some retailers, like REI, made a point of staying closed this year for the holiday. Nava thinks this stores could be missing out on customers.

“Those stores that don’t open up, it is their own choice,” he said. “They are going to lose customers.”

Best Buy is among the many retailers, Including Target, Toys R Us and Macy’s that will open Thursday evening for shopping deals, while another major Black Friday seller, Walmart, is open all day Thursday.
