St. Francis uses dining hall to extend hours of warming center

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

It's not even winter yet, but some warming centers are already opening up around the Portland area.

The St. Francis Catholic Church in southeast Portland offered a place where people who have nowhere else to go can escape the cold tonight.

The warming center is open from 9:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., but the church uses its dining hall to extend those hours.

“Most of the shelters close at six in the morning, that can be the coldest time of the day,” Valerie Chapman, Pastoral Administrator with St. Francis, explained. “We open early so that people are cared for around the clock.”

St. Francis Catholic Church is open six days a week, closing on Saturdays.
