Union Gospel Mission serves 1,300 meals on Thanksgiving

Posted: Updated:

The Union Gospel Mission held its annual traditional Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday in Old Town.

Over 100 volunteers helped serve the 1,300 meals. The meals were prepared with 100 turkeys, 300 pounds of mashed potatoes, 60 gallons of gravy, 1,200 dinner rolls, and 225 pumpkin pies.

Much of the food came from donations from local groups.

Stacy Kean with Union Gospel Mission said if you missed out on giving for Thanksgiving, the Mission is always looking for help from the community.

"We have a lot of really great donors. We had a group of gamers from PDX LAN gaming community help us out in early November with some gift certificate and donations, which was great. And a lot of people donating a little can make a big impact. So we're really grateful for a really generous community," said Stacy Kean, Communications Director at Union Gospel Mission. "Anytime's a good time to donate. We serve meals all year long. Sleeping bags, socks, coffee, we go through a lot of coffee."

In addition to getting a good meal, guests left with a cold weather pack including socks, a hat and gloves.

Union Gospel Mission has been serving Portland since 1927.
