BEND, OR (AP) -

Bend's downtown drinking fountains are serving their final Black Friday shoppers.

The city plans to remove them next week because of costs and safety concerns.

The Bend Bulletin reports the four outdoor fountains were installed in 1994 as part of an effort to beautify downtown.

Carolyn Eagen is Bend's economic development director. She says funding for maintenance dried up in 2010, when the city phased out its downtown urban renewal district.

As for safety, the city was not required in 1994 to install a mechanism to stop unwanted liquids from entering the spigot and mingling with drinking water. Current standards call for such a safety feature, and it might be expensive.
