NESKOWIN, OR (KPTV) -

A Washington company run by a TV show host that builds tree houses has been fined by the Construction Contractors Board over a project on the Oregon coast.

The board issued a $5,000 fine for working without a license against Nelson's Treehouse and Supply in Fall City, Washington.

The company is run by Pete Nelson, the host of "Treehouse Masters" on Animal Planet.

Investigators said the business was operating illegally when crews built a single-family tree house in a Sitka spruce in Neskowin. The tree house was built over the summer and is 46 feet off the ground.

The project was then featured on Nelson's TV show.

A news story about the broadcast caught the attention of a Construction Contractors Board investigator, who said the business was fined $1,000 in 2014 for working without a license on a project in Central Point.

As a repeat offender, the second violation resulted in a $5,000 fine.

"Contractors need to know how to operate legally in whatever state they are doing business in," said Stan Jessup, board enforcement manager. "Licensing in Oregon carries important protections for the consumer. It means the contractor is bonded and insured, and the CCB can help mediate any disputes between the homeowner and contractor."

Any subcontractors who knowingly work for an unlicensed contractor can be fined, according to a release from the board.

The Oregon Construction Contractors Board reports Nelson's Treehouse and Supply has yet to obtain a CCB license.
