Corbett school district cancels practices due to cold weather

CORBETT, OR (KPTV) -

One school district has decided to cancel practices Monday night due to the cold weather.

Despite having practice canceled,, Corbett High School's boys basketball team turned into more of an open gym and scrimmage.

"Notice came out during practice. We had some kids that were supposed to ride the bus home and the buses already left, so we hung out with them until their rides came to pick them up," said JV Coach Rodney Dunkin.

After practice got out, it was no surprise why the school district decided to cancel events. Cars that were parked outside were already starting to get covered with ice.

"It happened, practice started at 4, so about two hours. It's a lot of ice. It's pretty slick out," said Corbett HS student Wyatt Miller.

Conditions on the roads around Corbett started to get just as nasty.

"It's visible. There is a little bit of ice but it's visible when traffic comes, that's when you can see the glistening of ice, so we just took it slow and knew we needed to be cautious," said Karen Horn, who lives in Corbett.

While drivers were still able to get around, it was a different story earlier in the day along parts of the Central Valley.

Along Highway 22, several crashes were reported due to slick roads.

Down in Roseburg, an Oregon State Police cruiser was on the scene of a crash when it was hit by another car. That trooper was not hurt.

Meanwhile, the superintendent with the Corbett School District said they'll plan on making a decision if school will be delayed or possibly canceled by 5 a.m. Tuesday.
