Icy conditions cause multiple crashes on I-84 in the Gorge

Icy weather conditions and slippery roads caused a semi-truck to crash into a concrete barrier on Interstate 84 late Monday night.

Officials say the crash happened between 11 p.m. and midnight near the Bridal Veil Falls exit.

The Oregon Department of Transportation also said there were several other crashes, including a pickup that rolled over off the highway, all caused by ice Tuesday morning.

No injuries have been reported, but ODOT closed one lane of I-84 heading east. All lanes reopened by 12:40 p.m.

The National Weather Service in Pendleton issued a winter storm watch for Tuesday through Wednesday afternoon and evening. Drivers were advised to anticipate hazardous conditions on I-84 in The Dalles, Arlington, Boardman and Pendleton.

Other regional highways that are expected to see possible snow, ice or freezing rain include Highway 97 in Madras, Redmond and Bend, Highway 26 near Prineville and Highway 395 in Hermiston and Stanfield.

ODOT crews, working 12-hour shifts, have applied deicer along all lanes of I-84 between Hood River and Troutdale. Other roads treated with deicer include Highway 26, Highway 224/212 and Highway 211.

Corbett School District and Mt. Pleasant School were both closed Tuesday morning due to the weather, while the Washougal School District and Jewell School District were running 3 hours late.
