Drivers prepare for slick roads as ice storm hits the Columbia Gorge

All night people in the Columbia River Gorge were seeing very cold, windy and dry conditions, but that all changed in just a couple of hours when the first sign of freezing rain began.

ODOT and WASH-DOT spent most of Tuesday getting ready for the freezing rain and sleet.

FOX 12 was at Les Schwab along Burnside where customers were buying studs for their tires.

Crews spent the day installing 30 sets of studded tires and selling nearly 70 sets of chains.

The slick roads make Mera Stepman nervous when she has to drive through this on her way to Eastern Oregon for work.

"Just the ice, it's not bad with the snow. I don't like ice or freezing rain," said Stepman.

Les Schwab has some tips for drivers who have to get behind the wheel in these conditions:
Make sure you give yourself enough room between cars.
Slow down and don't be in a rush to get around.

They also said it's important to have a kit in your car with a blanket, water and food just in case you get stuck on the road while traveling.

The weather can change before you know it, making drivers like Andy Jones pay close attention to what kind of weather he'll find driving along I-84 into the Gorge on Wednesday.

"I'll check the conditions and see if I want to come back in or take the day off," said Jones.
