VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

Vancouver police arrested a man on Tuesday night after he allegedly assaulted a woman, ran from police and crashed his car into a nearby apartment complex.

Police responded to the scene near the 3300 block of Grand Blvd around 9:56 p.m.

The suspect, 41-year-old Douglas Atkins, was said to have assaulted a woman on the street while heavily intoxicated.

"She was pushing him and pushing him and so he punched her in the cheek," said witness Alyssa Williams.  "We all came out and were standing on my front porch, and there was another neighbor trying to defend her and said for him to go away, and get out."

Police said when they arrived at the scene, Atkins drove away, hitting another empty car in the process.

While police were following him, Atkins proceeded to crash into the porch of a house near the 600 block of Grand Boulevard, passing over the top of a parked car and landed on the roof of another car.  He then careened down an embankment landing several feet down below into an apartment complex.

"It was like a freight train, it was just this, 'boom,' I was trying to figure out what happened," said Sarah Lorde.

It was almost overwhelming, said Lorde, when she realized that noise was the sound of car crashing into her bedroom wall. The mangled mess of metal came to rest in her window sill, the car’s tire was essentially stuck in her screen.

"It could have been terrible, I can’t believe how it ended up, I don’t know what to say, its too much. I feel lucky today, very lucky," said Lorde.

Atkins was taken to a local hospital and treated for his injuries. There were no reports of injuries to people at the apartment complex.

Investigators said Atkins will face charges of eluding officers, hit and run, assault and driving under the influence.
