BIGGS JUNCTION, OR (KPTV) -

A standoff that shut down Highway 97 for four hours ended when SWAT used chemical agents to get a suspect out of a stolen van, according to police.

An Oregon State Police sergeant stopped to check on a 2006 Ford van that was parked along the highway about six miles south of Biggs Junction at 9 a.m.

Dispatchers advised the sergeant that the van had been reported stolen out of The Dalles on Nov. 27.

The person in the van, identified as Dean Allen Bromley, 24, of The Dalles, initially complied with the trooper's orders, but police said he then jumped back inside the van and refused to come out.

Additional troopers and deputies responded to the scene and OSP SWAT was activated to respond with an armored vehicle that allowed them safe access to the van.

SWAT used chemical agents to get Bromley to exit the vehicle. He was taken into custody at 12:45 p.m.

Bromley was booked at the Northern Oregon Regional Correctional Facility on one count of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

Highway 97 was closed for four hours, with drivers diverted around the scene on secondary roads.
