PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

An elderly woman died in a northeast Portland house fire on Wednesday morning.

Portland Fire & Rescue crews responded to the 12300 block of Northeast Hassalo Street at 10:50 a.m. Firefighters were told one woman was still inside the burning building when they arrived.

Firefighters entered the house through a window into a bedroom. Crews located the victim and removed her from the smoke-filled room. It was determined that she had already died.

Investigators said she was disabled and unable to escape on her own.

One other woman and three young children managed to escape before firefighters arrived. They were taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries described as non-life threatening.

Investigators determined the fire was accidental in nature caused by combustibles that were too close to a fireplace.

Firefighters said there was one smoke alarm found on the main floor, but they did not hear it as they entered the home. The people who escaped were in the basement and said they did not hear the smoke alarm.

Portland Fire & Rescue said anyone who needs help obtaining or installing smoke alarms should call the smoke alarm hotline at 503-823-3752.
