Portland city council approves permanent status for ride sharing programs

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

It wasn't a unanimous vote, but on Wednesday the Portland City Council voted to approve permanent status for ride sharing services like Uber and Lyft.

Uber and Lyft have been operating in Portland since April under a pilot program.

Commissioner Amanda Fritz said she wanted the city to require the companies to provide more insurance coverage when they're on duty. Commissioner Nick Fish joined her in the opposition.

Uber and Lyft together account for 6 in 10 for hire rides in the city.
