Icy weather causes power outages in Portland metro area

Posted: Updated:

Icy conditions caused a lot of excitement for people Tuesday night and throughout the Wednesday morning.

An ice storm started hitting the West Hills area late Tuesday night, eventually coating Skyline Boulevard with about a half-inch of ice.

Tree branches were knocked down and power was knocked out for some people.

Skyline Tavern closed early Tuesday night because the power kept going out.

The power was out for six hours at the owner's house just down the road.

"Well, it was cozy. I had a flashlight and a dog," said Scott Becker.

At the height of the storm about 5,000 PGE customers lost power, most of them along I-84 near Gresham and Troutdale.

PGE crews worked overnight cleaning up messes, like in SW Portland where a broken branch fell on a power line and a big toppled tree on NE 148th and Multnomah.

The ice stuck around through the morning commute.

"Earlier I was sliding a little bit, so I kind of figured I'd just pull over here and wait until daytime," said Jeffrey Santos, who moved to Oregon from Hawaii.

Jeffrey Santos was trying to get to work in the Gorge. He's from Hawaii and this was his first time driving in these conditions.

"It's exciting. I'll leave it at that," said Santos.

At Skyline Tavern, it was back to business as usual. They said they're ready for more storms.

"We're rechecking our hurricane lamp supplies and looking into generators. We think it's going to be like this a lot through the winter," said Becker.

FOX 12 spoke with some people who said they were asleep when their power was out.

PGE has restored power to most of their customers.
