PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland City Council on Wednesday unanimously passed an ordinance that would allow six weeks of paid parental leave each year for eligible city employees.

The paid parental leave would apply to employees after the birth of a child, an adoption or placement of a foster child. It will become effective on Jan. 1, 2016.

Multnomah County adopted a similar policy in October.
