USPS warns pot ads in mail are illegal

Posted: Updated:

Last week, the U.S. Postal Service sent a warning to some Northwest newspapers saying it’s illegal for them to mail any publications that contain ads for marijuana.

While recreational pot is now legal in Oregon and Washington, the postal service maintains that because pot is still illegal on a federal level, they can’t deliver ads for it.

Staff at the Chinook Observer in Long Beach Washington got the letter. They’re owned by the EO Media Group and CEO Steve Forrester says their Washington papers have been running pot ads for over a year. Now, he’s reaching out to lawmakers to fight back.

“My instinct was to ask Senator Wyden’s office to seek further information from the postal service,” said Forrester. “It seems to me there’s a disparity between what the postal service was telling our newspaper and the new reality with Oregon and Washington having legalized the selling of marijuana.”
