GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -

A family visiting Oregon said they were in the right place, at the right time when they tackled a man suspected of trying to steal a ring worth nearly $17,000.

Paris Perrantes was in court on Thursday. In court documents, investigators said he tried stealing the ring from the Gresham Fred Meyer.

As Perrantes was running out of the store, two people were able to tackle him.

FOX 12 spoke with the Pule family on the phone. They stopped at the store just before heading to the airport to fly home to Hawaii.

Turns out, mom and dad are corrections officers and the family knew they needed to jump into action.

"I held him there for just enough time for my step-brother to come in and push the shopping cart right in front of him to slow him down, and after that me and my step-dad jumped on him and took him to the ground," said Joseph Sigrah.

Perrantes has a long criminal history. He has 26 prior convictions, including 10 felonies.
