Tiny is back home: Chihuahua in stolen car returned to Salem family

Posted: Updated:

A family that had their car stolen with their dog inside received an unexpected phone call.

Four days after the theft, a voice on the other end of the phone said he wanted to return the dog.

The family was eating at McDonald's on Lancaster Drive Northeast in Salem at around 7 p.m. Monday when someone stole their 1993 Honda Accord with a Chihuahua named Tiny inside.

Meghan Fleming told FOX 12 she was far more concerned about getting Tiny back than the car.

Then her phone rang Thursday night.

"I got an anonymous phone call about 5:30 last night and they called me and said, 'I don't want the news. I don't want the cops. I just want to give you back your dog,'" Fleming said.

Fleming said she met with the caller Thursday night and was given the dog back. In fact, she said Tiny jumped out of the man's arms toward her.

Then, about midnight, an anonymous woman called saying where she could find her car. The caller led Fleming to the location of the car, but Fleming said it was in rough shape.

Tiny, however, while cold and tired, seems to be OK.
