PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The leader of a Portland non-profit has returned from visiting Syrian refugee camps in Greece and Lebanon.

Jeff Pinneo, the president and CEO of Medical Teams International, met with staff members working in the settlements, but spent the majority of his time with the refugees talking about their struggles and hopes.

“It’s really important to remember that no one wants to be a refugee,” he said. “They only get to that decision point after a building of pressure, a surrounding of circumstances that forces them to one day say, ‘we’ve gotta go.’”

Pinneo hopes that by sharing the stories of the refugees he met, he’ll inspire others to want to help.

“If your cul-de-sac neighbor was going through even a tenth of what these families are going through, we would all be all over it,” he said, “And here, the only thing that’s different is they’re on the other side of the world and their adversity is ten times as great.”

Medical Teams International provides humanitarian aid and health care around the world.
