COLUMBUS, OH (KPTV) -

The Portland Timbers held on to an early lead to defeat Columbus Crew 2-1 Sunday, becoming the 2015 MLS Cup Champions.

The Timbers’ Diego Valeri got the Timbers off to a great start with a goal in the first minute of the match, just 27 seconds in.

Rodney Wallace scored with a diving header from a Lucas Melano cross, bringing the Timbers lead to 2-0 in the first eight minutes of the match.

But after Wallace's goal, Columbus Crew fans reportedly threw beer cans at Timbers players on the field.

Columbus Crew’s Kei Kamara then scored 18 minutes in, with the Timbers still leading 2-1 at the conclusion of the first half.

In the second half, the Timbers had several close attempts at goals, including one that hit a post and Columbus Crew goalkeeper Steve Clark before going out of bounds.

But they maintained their lead throughout the half to win the match.

The Timbers announced that Diego Valeri was named the MLS Cump Most Valuable player after making that historic first goal of the game.

Valeri had missed the first to months of the 2015 season while recovering from an ACL tear, and made 22 starts in the regular season before starting all five playoff matches for Caleb Porter.
