Diagonal crosswalk introduced in busy NW Portland intersection

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The intersection of northwest 11th and Couch is one of the busiest for pedestrians in Portland.

Serving the A Loop, B Loop, north and south streetcar lines, the area is well used, and at times can be dangerous.

This intersection is now home to a new concept in Portland, a diagonal crosswalk.

It is called a pedestrian scramble or also referred to as a barnes dance.

While it may take time for people to get the hang of it, pedestrians believe that it will be a valuable tool for safety.

The intersection is just one block from busy Burnside Street.

PBOT says the lights from this block will time up with Burnside, which will ultimately benefit drivers.

City Commissioner Steve Novic says he hopes to see more pedestrian scrambles around the city.
