Wind and rain pounding the Northwest this week

Posted: Updated:

The week is getting off to a very wet and windy start across Oregon and Washington.

A series of storm systems will hit the region over the next several days, prompting a series of warnings and advisories from the National Weather Service.

For coastal areas, a high wind warning is in effect Monday morning, with gusts as high as 75 mph expected along the beaches.

The NWS issued a wind advisory for the Portland metro area and the Willamette Valley. Winds won't be as strong as on the coast, but gusts could reach 40 to 45 mph.

Most of the region is also under a flood watch through Wednesday due to heavy expected rainfall.

The National Weather Service says as much as 12 inches of rain could fall in the coastal mountains and parts of the Cascades this week. The valleys can expect to see between 3 and 5 inches of rain.

All that rain will melt much of the snow that has fallen in the Cascades so far, adding even more water to area rivers.

The NWS warned some rivers could reach flood stage as early as Monday morning.
