Johnson Creek surges out of its bank, floods large areas of SE Portland

Posted: Updated:

Johnson Creek in southeast Portland remains under a flood warning Monday night, after rising out of its banks around mid-day.

Parts of SE Foster Road are closed due to flooding including the stretch from SE 96th Avenue to 112th Avenue.

The intersection of SE Foster and 111 resembled a lake Monday afternoon.

Despite the road closure, dozens of drivers went around barricades and past road closure signs to attempt driving across the flooded intersection. While some people made it through, many cars stalled in the water.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation warned it is very dangerous drive through standing water on the streets.

Firefighters and PBOT maintenance crews rescued one driver, Amira Karar, who was stranded when her car stopped on Southeast Foster Road.

Karar said she didn't see any road closure signs and followed other drivers east on Foster. She realized she should have taken another road, but only when it was too late.

“I usually take this way home all the time and then I don't know, my car just stopped,” she said. “Then I saw the fire guys picking me up and it was just, oh my God… the scariest thing in the world.”

The Portland Bureau of Emergency Management sent an alert to people living near Johnson Creek telling them about the flood warning for the creek. The creek rose 1.5 feet in one hour this morning.

Around 8:45 p.m., Portland Fire & Rescue started evacuating the first story of the Tenino Terrace Apartments as a precaution.

PF&R said they are trying to set up shelters for the tenants.

PBOT advises driver that normally take Foster Road to take Southeast Holgate instead until water levels drop.
