Sea of fans welcome home the Portland Timbers after MLS Cup win

Posted: Updated:

On Sunday night, the champagne was flowing and the team was all smiles inside the Timbers locker room after their MLS Championship win.

The Portland Timbers are Major League Soccer champs in just their fifth year in the league, but for long-term fans of the franchise for the 40-years of ups and downs in the different incarnations of the club, these are the moments to savor as it's been a long time coming.

On Monday, a sea of supporters welcomed the Timbers, and their new trophy, back to Portland.

The Timbers Alaska Air jet touched down at PDX just before 4 p.m. and the league champs had their trophy in tow.

The road to the terminal was closed down for the assembled and chanting fans who welcomed home their champs.

The hundreds of fans, who skipped work and cut class to hang out and wait two hours, are reveling in owning the MLS Cup, the first for the club.

They were out of the playoff picture 8 short weeks ago, but the Timbers went on a run to never forget; nine straight unbeaten matches.

FOX 12 spoke with Coach Caleb Porter Monday morning before the team boarded the plane in Columbus. He said even though they went through some rough patches this season, he's proud of his team for bringing home the hardware.

"I don't think it's fully sunk in yet. Last night was a wonderful moment. To be able to share this with the players, it's been a long year, at times a difficult year. But to be able to win the MLS trophy and be able to bring it back to Portland is something no one can ever take away."

Coach Porter also said he thanks Portland fans for being the best in the league. He said with all the fans who showed up to Sunday's game in Columbus, it felt like more like a home game than away.

A parade is planned for Tuesday. It will start at 12 p.m. at the intersection of Broadway and Stark in downtown Portland and finish at the intersection of Broadway and Madison. A rally will also be held at Providence Park starting at 6 p.m.
