SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

A Salem Police K9 is retiring early from his law enforcement career due to medical issues.

K9 Rocky, a 4-year-old German Shepherd, has been with Salem Police since Oct. 2014. He was placed into active duty in Jan. 2015 along with his handler, Senior Officer Jay Pinkerton.

Officer Pinkerton and Rocky were deployed 84 times in the field, resulting in 60 captures of criminals and 110 criminal charges.

Rocky has been adopted by Family Pet Partners, a non-profit in Salem. It is the goal of Family Pet Partners to find a safe, family-oriented home for Rocky.

The SPD has received a 19-month-old black Czechoslovakian German Shepherd as Officer Pinkerton's new partner, and they will be on patrol following a training period.
