Landslide breaks SW Portland sewer pipe

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A landslide Monday night broke a city sewer pipe on southwest Montgomery Drive just east of southwest Vista Avenue, according to the Bureau of Environmental Services.

Sewage from the broken pipe flowed downhill on at least four streets, and drained back into the city’s combined sewer system near southwest 18th Avenue and Market Street.

City maintenance crews found the broken pipe just after 7 p.m. Monday, according to officials.

By 10:45 p.m., a temporary system was created to bypass the broken pipe and stop the sewage release.

The city is planning to make temporary repairs to stabilize the pipe until engineers finish designing permanent repairs.

Streets affected by the sewage release are southwest Montgomery Drive, Cable Avenue, 18th Avenue, and Mill Street Terrance.

Crews have posted sewage spill warning signs on those streets.
