Beaverton residents stock up on sandbags as water creeps close to homes

BEAVERTON, OR (KPTV) -

Neighbors raced to fill sandbags in the Beaverton area as floodwater's covered city streets for the second night in a row.

The water was several feet deep in some spots on SW Murray and Rita on Tuesday.

Crews were handing out sandbags to residents as the water rose dangerously close to homes.

"We've run out of sandbags. We're trying to get as many people sandbagged up as we can, but we just need more help and we need this rain to stop," said Sarah Rockwell.

With bags on front porches and blocking garages, neighbors were left with no choice but to wait.

"My crawl space is flooded, my garage is flooded. I'm just worried about my house," said Rockwell.

Many unloaded bag after bag at Jeanne and Barry Steele's home, in front of the garage and back door.

The Steele's have lived there for 46 years and said this flooding is the worst they've ever seen.

"I thought I could go through this but it's awful," said Jeanne Steele.

As FOX 12 was leaving the area the water was receding almost as quickly as it had risen.
