NEWPORT, OR (KPTV) -

Highway 101 was closed in Newport Wednesday after an officer-involved shooting.

According to Oregon State Police, two Newport Police Department Officers and one Lincoln County Sheriff's Deputy responded to Agate Beach RV Park around 11:50 a.m. and contacted Nantharath Thilavan, 53, from Portland.

OSP said Thilavan 'became combative' and officers made attempts to stop him with non-lethal force but were unsuccessful. Thilavan raised a 'dangerous weapon' and threatened officers.

OSP said one officer fired his gun at the suspect, striking him. Thilavan was taken to Newport Hospital with critical injuries. He was then transported by air ambulance to Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis.

The officer was not injured.

The highway was closed in both directions near 60th Street in Agate Beach, which is north of Yaquina Head, but was back open around 6:30 p.m.

OSP said they are continuing their investigation. No other information is available at this time.
