EF-1 tornado hits Battle Ground; dozens of homes damaged

BATTLE GROUND, WA (KPTV) -

An EF-1 tornado hit Battle Ground on Thursday morning. 

The National Weather Service did not immediately confirm if it was a tornado, but the organization sent a team out to assess the damage. By late Thursday afternoon, the National Weather Service confirmed a tornado had hit Battle Ground. 

The National Weather Service then reported it was an EF-1 tornado with max winds at 104 mph. 

Reports started coming in about the tornado around 11 a.m. Thursday. Images from the scene showed downed trees, broken fences and flipped trampolines. Authorities said they received at least 36 reports of damaged homes.

A Clark County Fire & Rescue spokesman said it first hit near Northeast 4th and Grace Avenue. There were reports of downed power lines, but no immediate reports of any injuries. Students and staff at Battle Ground schools were ordered to shelter in place as a precaution. 

Clark Regional Emergency Services reported two commercial buildings were damaged and deemed unsafe by city inspectors. Real Deals on Home Décor and IQ Food Market on South Parkway were both evacuated.

Roads in the area were closed throughout the day. 

Crews also responded to reports of a possible natural gas leak near the Tukes Mountain area. Clark Public Utilities turned off power from Rasmussen south to Eaton while cleanup efforts were underway.
