JEFFERSON, OR (KPTV) -

A lightning strike started a fire that destroyed a home in Marion County.

Firefighters were called out to the 1200 block of Miller Road in Jefferson at 11:23 p.m. Wednesday.

They arrived to find flames coming from the back of the house and an attached garage. The Jefferson Fire District reports the wind was driving the fire and it soon engulfed the back of the home and spread to the front.

A woman in the home woke up and evacuated with her children. They were not injured. Red Cross responded to provide support to the family.

Firefighters said one of two dogs in the home, a Chihuahua named Angel, as well as a bird named Blue died in the fire.

The fire was deemed under control at 1:55 a.m. Thursday.

The 2,500-square-foot home that was built in 1940 is a complete loss with damage estimated at $150,000. The Jefferson Fire District reported the approximate value of the contents is $250,000.

Firefighters said the family in the home has renters insurance. The homeowner, who does not live in town, was notified. He has homeowners insurance, according to firefighters.
