The tornado that roared through Battle Ground Thursday hit in the middle of a school day.

Students and teachers sheltered in place until it passed. While no schools were damaged, some students came home to a trail of damage all through their neighborhoods.

Imagine being at school and seeing your home on the news. That’s what happened to Samantha Roberson, an eighth-grader at Tukes Valley Middle School, where students sheltered in place until the storm passed.

Roberson said students first thought it was a drill, until her principal made an announcement over the intercom and asked all the students to move into the hallway.

“They said, ‘This is bad weather, there is a tornado and it is going through,’” she explained. “’We need you guys in the middle because if it breaks the windows, we want you out of the rooms.’”

Moving to a safer spot in the school did not put her at ease, though, as she began to see reports of where the storm hit.

“I was really scared, and we went downstairs because it was safer downstairs,” Roberson said. “The first thing I saw on the news was our tree that had fallen and I was really worried and I was scared.”

There is a hole in the roof of Roberson’s home and some trees were uprooted, but other than that, her family is fine.

Battle Ground schools sent the following message to parents while the storms precautions were in place.

This is a weather update. Severe weather has been reported near the city of Battle Ground. Students are safe and schools are open. As a precautionary measure, several of our schools are sheltering in place. AM kindergarten buses are on hold. PM kindergarten buses are in route and will pick up students who are at the bus stops and take them to school. We will update you as conditions change.
