Police: Burglary suspect shoots homeowner in Salem

SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

Salem Police are investigating a shooting that happened following an interrupted burglary on Thursday afternoon.

Police said a 64-year-old male victim came home, in the 5500 block of 8th Ave SE, to find a suspect was attempting to steal his truck.

The victim confronted the suspect and the suspect pulled a gun on him. The suspect fired at the victim. The victim sustained a non-life threatening injury.

Police said the victim was carrying his own gun and fired at the suspect. The suspect fled the area on foot.

The victim was treated and released at Salem Hospital.

Officers arrived on scene and starting checking the area for the suspect. K9 track led to a creek parallel to Ironwood Dr SE.

More officers, K9's and SWAT responded to the area to help search for the suspect.

During the search, Sumpter Elementary School was locked down as a precautionary measure.

The suspect was not located during the search. 

Salem Police said the suspect is described as a male with dark complexion, 25-30 years old, short dark colored hair, dark colored eyes and no facial hair.
