Residents start to clean up after EF-1 tornado hits Battle Ground

Posted: Updated:

An EF-1 tornado caused a lot of damage, but was limited to a small area in Battle Ground, WA. No one was injured, but there's a big mess to clean up.

A combination of chainsaws and heavy machinery helped clear South Parkway in Battle Ground, an area that felt the force of the tornado.

"I'm eating breakfast and I'm sitting in the house looking out the window. All this debris starts blowing over here. Trees are bending over and everything, and then it really got bad," said Gary Day.

Gary Day lost two trees and part of his fence. He said he closed his blinds when he heard the tornado approaching.

"The whole house was shaking, like the whole house was gonna come down. It sounded like a loud roaring noise," said Day.

Vickie Tomberlin was in her kitchen. She heard shattering glass and ran to take cover in the bathroom. When she walked outside later she realized a tree had fallen on her house, and her fence was in splinters.

"She had pieces of the fence blow through the outside wall into the living room, penetrate all the way through. Yeah. I'm just glad she's OK," said Justin Barskey, whose moms home was damaged.

On one street, the roof of Real Deals on Home Decor crumpled like tinfoil. Other roofs need patching before the next rain.

Clean up of debris continued well into the evening with many residents in Battle Ground lending a helping hand.

The city of Battle Ground hasn't come up with a dollar value estimate of the damage caused by the storm, they did say more than 30 homes had some kind of damage.
