The Portland Timbers have acquired a player from the team they just defeated to win the MLS Cup.
The club announced Friday the acquisition of defender Chris Klute from the Columbus Crew in exchange for general allocation money.
Klute, 25, has appeared in 71 MLS matches with 63 starts since his debut in 2012. He joined the Crew in a draft-day trade in January.
“Chris is an experienced MLS defender that also has a big upside, similar to when we acquired Jorge Villafaña two years ago,” said Gavin Wilkinson, general manager of the Timbers.
The team also announced Friday that Villafaña had been transferred to five-time Liga MX champions Santos Laguna of Mexico.
Villafaña, 26, made 52 regular-season appearances for the Timbers over two seasons from 2014-2015. He joined the club in a trade with Chivas USA in December 2013.
"This was a win-win for Jorge and for our club; it was an opportunity that neither one of us could pass up," said Caleb Porter, head coach of the Timbers. "We wish Jorge all the best and thank him for his contributions to our championship."
